SwedishAmerican Breaks Ground on Special Procedures Catheterization Laboratory Expansion

SwedishAmerican is pleased to announce it broke ground on its new state-of-the-art Special Procedures Catheterization Laboratory (Cath Lab) expansion, a facility used to perform interventional cardiology, interventional radiology, and peripheral vascular procedures. Interventional cardiology procedures include stenting and balloon angioplasty, diagnosis and treatment of heart arrhythmias, and more. Interventional radiology and peripheral vascular procedures focus on diagnosing and intervening on vasculature other than the heart. The new Cath Lab expansion will allow SwedishAmerican to continue to save hundreds of lives each year.

SwedishAmerican leadership, doctors, nurses and patients officially broke ground on the 12,000-square-foot expansion which will be built on the hospital’s downtown campus. Additional project partners for the new facility include Ringland Johnson and Cannon Design.

The expansion will include five new modern Cath Lab rooms housed with state-of-the-art technology, reducing radiation and improving quality of images. In addition, renovations will be made to the current Cath Lab prep & recovery space, turning it into 14 Cath Lab prep/recovery rooms and 14 post-anesthesia care unit (PACU) rooms. Providers who will use the Cath Lab on a daily basis include interventional cardiologists, electrophysiologists, interventional radiologists and vascular surgeons.

“On average, SwedishAmerican currently sees more than 4,800 cases each year in the Cath Lab,” said SwedishAmerican Cardiologist Dr. Yaser Siraj. “With the new Cath Lab expansion, we will now be able to treat even more patients each year and utilize this increased technology to deliver high quality cardiovascular and interventional services to our patients.”

The Cath Lab expansion will add approximately 200 union labor construction jobs. Construction on the clinic will officially begin later this month with a completion date of summer 2019.

“With a strong 107 year history of serving the community, the expansion of our Cath Lab will allow us to continue to deliver high quality heart care to our patients,” said SwedishAmerican President and CEO Dr. Michael Born. “This is just one more instance of how SwedishAmerican cares for its community and cares for the health and wellness of its residents and patients.”

In addition to the Cath Lab expansion, SwedishAmerican will soon break ground on its $60 million Women and Children’s Tower on SwedishAmerican’s downtown campus, along with Edgewater Medical Center on North Main Street. Construction is currently underway at Riverwest Clinic on Marchesano Drive and Creekside Medical Center on North Bell School Road.
